Instead, I get a man who tries to run his horse to death, almost lets his sister's saviour freeze to death and a ship that by all rights should have sunk the second they left the harbour. Right, positivos - the three leads, Zerina, Ulrik and Esara, carried my interest from start to finish. The book jumps around like the characters do which is fortunate as it helps us get to the end more quickly. Beswick's writing is similar to the first book in that it's simple, easy to access, cliché in places, but will surprise you with poignancy at times. It was a smart choice on the author's part to focus on a totally different character within the world.

Apart from the main cast there were some notable side characters but unfortunately most of the side characters felt like replaceable cannon fodder without distinct personalities. When there was action it was good, and I am thankful that there wasn’t a ton of filler, but I also kinda of missed a little more exposition and settling into the story. Normally you hear people complain about an author padding the story with unnecessary details, but this one feels like entire sections could have been fleshed out for the better. I feel like there was too much rushing taking place - some of the more intriguing scenes didn't get the attention to detail they were deserving of. The story was interesting perhaps caused in part because I was not yet familiar with the underlying folk tale.

This is the second book in the series, though these characters and events save the mentioning of the leader of the "bad guys" had nothing to do with book one. A horse that 'bucks' twice in fifty pages without unseating its novice rider, and eats nothing but apples.

I cannot wait for the next book in the Levanthria series, and I am intrigued to see if/ when we may see reappearances of characters from previous books. I wanted more about Zerina getting to know Ulrik, and really solidify the relationship between the three main characters. I am not familiar with the story of Blackbeard, but I'm assuming this is a prequel; how Blackbeard came about.

Again, my complaint of the book is that it too short and pretty much everything could be expanded on, events, the characters, world building. This is the second book set in these lands and although not directly linked to AFOVAV I would recommend reading that one first due to some character mention overlaps and the scene is set in the first one.The pacing was a bit different from what I usually read but I felt like it got straight to the point without a ton of unnecessary details. Even though I enjoyed this book, I wish that there was more development of the slow burn, but that is just me! I will get to book three only to see if we revisit book one characters or if we get any closer to tying it all together. I was a little sceptical at first as I knew it was set in the same realm but a completely different story. Though this book doesn’t necessarily move the overarching plot of the whole series on, (it’s more like a parallel book to ‘A Forest of Vanity and Valour’ rather than a sequel) it gives enough that you can see in future books it will all come together.

My major complaint with the first was there were too many almost identical fight scenes, but this book was much better paced with the fighting and the enemies. While this makes for faster paced storytelling, I found the pacing of the book to become rather slow once the two character were united. To the point there was one or two moments in this book which made me well up, which has never happened as far as reading a book goes.
