He thinks of himself as alpha male, he talks about himself as alpha male, he acts like alpha male, but he's also an alpha jerk. From the moment you wake up, set yourself a challenge, even if it's a small one, like making sure your bed is made before you leave the house. I like the way it mixes events from his life with lessons that these events taught him, and shows how the reader can use this to make changes to their own life. He's up Everest, making scathing disparaging remarks about all the 'Westerners' and 'tourists' - Um, HELLO? He talks about his fear during tours in war arenas, and training himself not to fear it while he was preparing at home, travelling to war, settling at the base and heading out the mission.

In prison, he was thrust into the unknown, cut off from friends and family, isolated with thoughts of failure and dread for his future. When it comes to reading a book from an author that is telling an autobiographical account of their life, with some shared methods and tools of self improvement, this book really shines with very good balance. Not to take away from his first book, but for me, this was so much more than I expected and really resonated with me. He explores the Power of a Positive Mindset, to countermand the fear bubble, and demonstrates if harnessed correctly how it can bring a life without limits. Fear gives Ant his edge, allowing him to seek out life's challenges, whether that is at home, pushing himself every day to be the best father he can be, or stuck in the death zone on top of the world in a 90mph blizzard. His first book, First Man In, was a Number 1 bestseller, staying in the hardback charts for 33 weeks, and selling over 500,000 copies across all formats. I really like this book for ant middletons ways of getting his own personal struggles over to the reader and to help or give advice to others. Love him or hate him Ant Middleton has come up with a different way to look at combating fear and anxiety.

For me personally it was thoroughly enjoyable, I actually haven’t read his first book, or know much about him until I read this, which 3/4 in, led me to binge on some of his ‘SASwhodareswins’ tv series. Ant breaks down the fear bubble with ease, by overcoming the different types of fears and default/victim mentalities to open more doors in life. Everyone will naturally have their own opinion on the star rating of this book, as it’s going to relate to people in different ways. After thirteen years in the military, with four years as a Special Forces sniper, Ant Middleton is the epitome of what it takes to excel. With regards to the expedition, there’s one part (that I won’t spoil) where I could not believe what I was reading. His way is his own for telling or explaining and it may not be for everyone but its defiantly worth a read. As he steps into it, he is permitted to be afraid it the bubble pops and he is rewarded with the rush of adrenaline from dealing with it.

He tried to imagine a bubble around the place and event ie he needed to gain entry to a room where the bad guy was, and to not be afraid until he stepped into the bubble. Even though I've studied CBT as part of my counselling training, the book was a good refresher and reminded me to check my mind set again. It's why in life, there's always some b*stard nipping at your fin, trying it on, trying to provoke and drag you down to their level.Although he talks about constantly getting rid of ego he contradicts himself ad nauseam by playing the macho-role, refusing to take advice from the experts in his team qualified to lead him, and generally putting everyones life in danger purely because he is seeking out the most extreme adrenaline rush. When things don't go as you'd planned, that negative chatter will kick in, telling you, 'I told you so. Whatever Brownie points I might give him for being honest about the above I would take away for his hypocrisy as he relentlessly sneers at 'tourist' climbers who are ill-prepared for the task. Thanks to the revolutionary concept of the Fear Bubble, Ant has learned to harness the power of fear and understands the positive force that it can become.
