Description

I couldn’t stand the negative, narrow-minded commentary and lack of descriptive depth of some of the world’s most wonderful train journeys any longer and gave up soon after New York. Although observing that “most people drawn to the Amtrak trains were unhinged to varying degrees”, she concludes “Americans who have never ridden on their railways have no idea what they are missing. But it wasn’t long before she was carefully plotting a route that would cover 45,000 miles – almost twice the circumference of the Earth – coasting along the world’s most remarkable railways; from the cloud-skimming heights of Tibet’s Qinghai railway to silk-sheeted splendour on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. She does reluctantly admit that they have their own character, and are not as sterile as she had expected, but she keeps her descriptions here very short.

Packing up her rucksack – and her fiance, Jem – Monisha Rajesh embarks on an unforgettable adventure that takes her from London’s St Pancras station to the vast expanses of Russia and Mongolia, North Korea, Canada, Kazakhstan, and beyond. From the author of Around India in 80 Trains comes another witty and irreverent look at the world and a celebration of the glory of train travel. It gives a serious case of wanderlust and what more can you ask for from a book that paints a beautiful picture about traveling?Canadians don't take trains, they drive monster trucks from one province to the next, but that requires concentration on the road, and the need to stay awake. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall).

A lot of the time in the book we only have fleeting glimpses from the train window of some of the countries they pass through. What frustrated me the most is that she thought she was going to be killed in her hotel in Canada because she’s of Indian heritage and instead it was the bang of the AC.Though at times Rajesh is very pessimistic and critical of the world, she has a balanced amount of beautiful storytelling and representation of people's opinions.
