The neighborhood looks different too, but she’s still the same woman and it’s still the same place, and as the past erupts into view, they slowly collide. A gripping yet tender depiction of family dynamics, love and disillusionment, At the Table is about what it means to grow up - both as an individual, and as a family. The four characters are all so flawed and yet charming and I really enjoyed the structure of the book which takes place at meals over the course of a year following each member of the family in turn. Painfully realistic, this frank but tender portrayal of people at their lowest is a book everyone can relate to.

This is the story of a family of four; the Maguires, in all their messy, honest and wonderful glory. The lives of Rafiq’s three children becoming increasingly dependent on their relationship to money:Siver, the only daughter, escapes into an unhappy marriage in Baghdad before fleeing to raise her daughter as a single mother in Dubai. Oh to be a reader all the time instead being restricted to a single silly mind and body that has to feel feelings and take things personally. Chociaż lektura należała do całkiem przyjemnych, obawiam się, że nie jest to historia, którą zapamiętam na długo. Rafiq Hardi Kermanj, founder of the Communist Party of Kurdistan, is forced to flee Tehran for London with his family. The subtle observations described in such intricate detail mean that this is a fly on the wall story like no other. At the Table did for me what I hoped Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections would (although I read that a good 10 years ago so probably shouldn't judge. Armed with a key and new knowledge about his parents' past, Nik sets out to unlock the secrets that his mother has been holding onto his whole life. The simple details of everyday life are just spot on every time and you could feel the ups and downs and anxieties of each character.

Bo choć doceniam wiele elementów powieści, to jako całość mi się nie podobała, często irytowała, a jednocześnie była na tyle okej, że nie mogę powiedzieć o niej nic złego. A gripping yet tender depiction of family dynamics, love and disillusionment, At the Table is about what it means to grow up – both as an individual, and as a family.Jedyne określenie jakie przychodzi mi do głowy to że ta książka jest bardzo płaska, bohaterowie też, niby coś się dzieje ale jakby nic. I felt that his storyline was very well written and I would read a book through his POV in a heartbeat.
