This book was my October choice for my Facebook Reading Challenge, the theme of which was a children’s book. When you read the book you quickly see how it could not have been written much before the 1980s, although even then it would have been quite ground-breaking; it deals with child abuse, amongst other things, pretty remarkable in a children’s book.

I would recommend this books to children no younger than 9 as it is quite sad in parts and may disturb younger readers. Perfect for gifting and sharing the classic story with loved ones, Puffin will publish GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM in clothbound hardback on 6 th May 2021. It has been a musical (which I must admit I cannot possibly imagine) twice, a play once, and in 1998 it was a TV movie. It has been adapted for television by Brian Finch and as a play by David Wood, broadcast as a radio series in Sweden and Norway, and been optioned by Gaumont for television. As a young man, he lost his wife and their baby to scarlatina, a loss that affected him so deeply that he became almost a recluse, living in a small cottage beside the village graveyard with his dog Sam.A beautiful jacketed hardback with a new introduction and extra bonus material written by the author, Michelle Magorian, reissued to mark the 40th anniversary of first publication. I would recommend this book to children above the age of 9 as it is a good book but some parts are sad and parts of it could be quite disturbing for younger children. And the insight this 40th anniversary special gave us into his relationship with his wife through the inclusion of the short story was sweet and very tragic. Like many shocked, disorientated and lonely sea-evacuees she is faced with bombed streets and rationing, has to adjust to living with relatives who seem like strangers including her four year old brother born in her absence and is expected to behave like an English girl.

If the goal is to get readers into the library and engaged with library resources, a program can be short, simple, and still fun! I still laughed (seriously, Zach and I need to be best friends) and I still got teary at certain parts and I still got a warm feeling in my tummy at that epilogue. The characters were well developed and I ended up really caring about Tom and Willie, willing them to stay together as a family.

We had to read this in primary school, and it's been one of my most-read, well-loved books ever since.
