Description

Father Alban Butler was born in 1710, at Appletree, North-amptonshire, the second son of Simon Butler, Esq.

Butler goes off on enormous tangents in his descriptions, often spending dozens of pages describing a war, a political situation or a heresy that happened during the life of the saint without really affecting the saint directly. As someone who isn't Catholic and whose (rather deficient) knowledge of church history is focused more on the Orthodox world, it was an interesting read.Excellent for spiritual reading and encouragement and a good reference for homilies and spiritual presentations.

Having served in the Sinai and Palestine campaign during the First World War, he developed an interest in Eastern Christianity while in the Middle East. For those who value freedom and science as well as their Christian faith, this edition is a valuable contribution. This substantial hardback book, beautifully illustrated with black and white etchings, is the perfect solution for so many Catholics anxious to get reacquainted with the lives of the saints, but who have too little time to read more thorough biographies.I learned that suffering with the joy of the Lord makes your faith in God stronger and you become a Christ like example to others.

Butlter's Lives of the Saints remains a remarkable reference source and, through its comprehensive biographies, a valuable aid to devotion and a rich source of historical information. We have extensively proofread the text thus generated, and have made the layout “user friendly” as the moderns so succinctly state. Numerous conferences and publications testify to the increased attention being given to their lives as richly documented sources for the study of social and cultural, as well as religious history. It can show the vibrancy and wonder of the Lord's miracles and also the simplicity of devotion to Him, the Almighty. Written in the early 19th Century by Alban Butler, and English convert to Catholicism, this twelve volume collection was a collection of the stories of the lives of all the Saints that existed at that time. I love what Alban said after a flogging "I worship and adore the true and living God, who created all things! A compilation and condensation of the full work of Butler and his lives of the saints of the Catholic Church. Butler's Lives of the Saints includes information on a variety of men and women who lived the gospel-from the first to the twentieth century-from such diverse areas as Western and Eastern Europe, and the Near East.

Butler's Lives of the Saints is the most revered Catholic book after the Bible, the Missal and The Imitation of Christ. Saints, the popular heroes and heroines of every age, also have an importance beyond the inspiration they provide. The book is a great stalwart teacher in aid to becoming more and more what the Lord sees capable in us and of us.

There's no way that reading this book and making it an accompaniment to your life will not help you. I must admit that my review is based on the on-line version, so I cannot vouch for this particular edition. The work of an English layman, Donald Attwater, added more saints, which brought the total to 2,565, compared to the original 1,486. We completed the “Chapter House” in 2023 to accommodate the growing number of monks and provide a Sacristy, Infirmary, classrooms and the Chapter itself. Joan Carroll Cruz This book tells of consecrated Hosts which have visibly turned to human flesh, have bled, levitated, and which have become hard as flint when received by a person in mortal sin.
