Description

It's so simple to understand as the author breaks down the language of critical thinking and puts it in a way that makes sense! Beginning with the basics and building towards structured evaluations of longer texts, this book offers invaluable guidance to both students and general readers.

The book effectively clarifies what critical thinking is and how it is used in academic reading, writing and note-taking. Stella was formerly Director of Lifelong Learning at the University of Leeds, and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of East London. A little bit disappointed with product as it was in a worse shape than described by seller, so I would have paid a little less, but I will try and get new edition of this one.No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. The book also very cleverly highlights many 'pitfalls' of writing which (most) people tend to make in their writing without realising.

There are checklists in this book to evaluate your own essays, such checking for internal consistency, logic rules, lines of reasoning, a clear thesis statement etc. Moreover, the book also enables the reader to assess their own skills which can be quite useful for writing arguments and identifying the possible flaws in the same. People later in their careers may find it a bit basic but you can consider it as a sort of reference. Stella was formerly Director of Lifelong Learning at the University of Leeds, UK, and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at the University of East London, UK.In practice, Critical Thinking is a skill that undergraduate learners are supposed to master as they complete their studies. She is the million copy best-selling author of The Study Skills Handbook , The Palgrave Student Planner , The Exam Skills Handbook , Study Skills Connected , You2Uni and Skills for Success , a key text on personal development planning. Only thing that I disagree with the author is that early on the book, the author insist on being non-emotional while accessing an argument. This book is not meant to be read line by line because there are certain pages that contain obvious information.

With this in mind, Critical Thinking Skills has taken the seemingly baffling art of analysis and broken it down into easy to understand blocks, with clear explanations, good examples, and plenty of activities to develop understanding at each stage. It is an ongoing critical reference book I will come back to time and time again to pick on key points which I want to refine a bit more in my writing skills. This easy to follow, step-by step guide to developing reasoning skills even applies the techniques to tasks such as reading, note-taking, and writing.

I like the fact that the book has lots of activities and tests for you to complete, so that you aren't just being bombarded by lots of information. Instead, you're constantly being required to check that you understand what's being said, and therefore you're much more likely to remember it all. Filled with helpful activities and tried-and-tested tools, this bestselling book shows readers how to construct effective arguments, improve critical analysis, and hone reflective thinking skills.

These resources are designed to support teaching and learning when using this textbook and are available at no extra cost. Finally, it triggered me to explore the subject of critical thinking more broadly, by referring to similar books.
