Descendant of the Crane takes place in a fictional kingdom inspired by China where the people were once ruled by greedy monarchs that used soothsayers to secure their rule. The author had already proven she was very good at twists, but that one, for some reason, felt especially extra.

We might have different ways of viewing the world and people around us; I hope the book shows you that that’s okay, and that two (or more) things can be equally valid even if we don’t personally connect with one of them. The thing is, I like to nurture what I’ve written over time—tending to the words like a gardener tending to the garden. At the same time, Hesina must reconcile with the river of spilled blood between her forebearers and the downtrodden Sooths and find a way to lead her people out of their fear and hatred. This has one of the best "trial" scenes I've seen in a book, like Joan He was the John Grisham of YA fantasy authors. Plus, there’s also politics with another country (I definitely hope to see more of this in a potential sequel if it happens) and I was devouring it all.

I also loved Hesina, our morally grey main character, who (despite starting out very innocent) gets a lot of development without any special snowflake tropes. She reacts to situations exactly how I’d imagine I would if i were a 17 year old princess who lost the parent I was the closest to and inherited a kingdom built on hatred. Descendant of the Crane features an intricate plot with both a huge murder mystery as well as so much political intrigue.

As for the other question—what happens at the end/after—that, unfortunately, is one that I’ve decided I can no longer answer. There’s court trials for the murder and the politics is mixed in, as the traitor may lie somewhere in the court . Even though she didn't always make the right decisions and she had many misconceptions about her kingdom, it was admirable how she believed in herself and had the courage to pursue the things she thought were right.

By the end, her antagonists’ villainy illuminates the morality of each character, and the reader is still a long way from sundering villain from hero.
