Ik heb een lijstje gemaakt en ook al zal deze niet zo lang zijn als die van anderen, hij is te lang. Laura talks about intersectional feminism, about how it’s not the women who should change but how all the problems are rooted in our systems on different levels. She was awarded a British Empire Medal for services to gender equality in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list 2015 and has been named woman of the year by Cosmopolitan, Red Magazine and The Sunday Times Magazine.

Laura Bates has brilliantly put into words many of my own experiences where I have never had the words for them before. To have access to an abortion is and should be a given right to women, but removing that is sickening.

The idea that the solution is for women to “better track our movements” or “stay home after dark” is absolutely unacceptable . Sebuah kritik tertulis dari Bates kepada 5 ekosistem institusi yang menindoktrinasi, memaksakan, dan menormalisasi inequality. In reality, every democracy, however sophisticated or stable it may look, has been attacked or actually destroyed by a would-be Caesar, from Ancient Greece to the present day. She is also contributor at Women Under Siege, a New-York based organisation working to combat the use of sexual violence as a tool of war in conflict zones worldwide.

The fact that only a quarter of the Cabinet are women might just explain why working mothers lost their jobs at far higher rates than fathers during the Covid-19 pandemic, and new mothers were forced to give birth alone while pubs were allowed to open.

Ze verontschuldigde zich tegenover de jongere generatie, dat ondanks dat het zo leek het toen ook al niet oké was. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

She has written for the Guardian, the Independent, the New Statesman, Red Magazine and Grazia among others. It definitely makes you feel like you need to re-engage with movements for a better, safer world for women everywhere. Bates pursues her thesis across five key areas: education, policing, criminal justice, media and politics. If you are looking for solutions, or a magic bullet, it’s not really going to satiate that need… but at the same time you know what you should do (stand up for yourself and other women - keep pushing for improvements - and encourage people to seek help and come forward).El libro aún no está en español (arribando a las editoriales para que se pongan las pilas), así que si pueden leer en inglés, les invito de todo corazón a leerlo. What if women can’t network, mentor, charm, assert and lean in their way out of sexism because this is a system that is rigged against them? The people who are supposed to protect us, teach us, present news to us, govern or bring justice on our behalf are upholding ideas that actively harm minorities, but hide behind the very effective, yet fictitious phenomenon of "isolated incidents". It’s a powerful opener that sticks with you throughout; I will be making my own list and expect to lighten the weight of it with a glass of wine in the company of my incredible female friends. Bates’s central message, which she has developed through her Everyday Sexism Project, the online forum that has now received 200,000 stories of sexism and misogyny from all over the world, and books including Girl Up (2016) and Men Who Hate Women (2020), is that there is a spectrum of gender inequality.

The final part of this book describes how and why would-be Caesars come to grief, from the Gunpowder Plot to Trump's march on the Capitol and the ejection of Boris Johnson by his own MPs, and ends with a defence of the grubby glories of parliamentary politics and a thought-provoking roadmap of the way back to constitutional government. I find this to be a powerful, thought-provoking opener, as I think some women, myself included may not realise that certain behaviour, is actually sexism, and we were the victims of that. This book will infuriate you and open your eyes to so many injustices that you simply accept as “life as it is” presented with many accounts from real women and statistics that will shock, frighten and sadden you.For Laura Bates, it began with a heavy piece of gold jewellery that her mother found on the passenger seat of the family car. I think what I do find difficult to comprehend, is the fairly recent overturning of Roe v Wade in the United States.
