Description

The children are unable to tell him Joe’s last name, as apparently Aunt Polly doesn’t know it, or where he came from.

Philip Mannering is the very first character we meet in the Adventure series, as he sits beneath a tree on a hillside puzzling over algebra. He’s given adjectives, too, which by themselves are not so terrible yet which form a clear and familiar pattern: the sulky black man, the sullen black man, the angry black man.To be honest at first I kept expecting them to break into rude jokes like the Comic Strip Presents episodes.

Ominous rumblings from the ground, a pack of wolves roaming the area, a black fugitive, and Philip's disappearance are but a few of the mysteries the children have to unravel about the mountain. But Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack are not prepared for the dangerous adventure that awaits them in the abandoned copper mines and secret tunnels beneath the sea. The underground portion plays out more or less as it does in the book with the children getting locked in a cave minus Jack who’s off looking for Kiki. Philip Mannering meets Jack and Lucy-Ann at Mr Roy’s house where the boys are receiving extra tuition, and the three immediately become good friends. Her books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author.Boards with rubbing, creasing, edge and corner wear, marks, wear top and bottom of spine, discolouration. The children don’t play-act at bad air but break the lamp and escape leading to a few minutes of confusing running around in the dark (they’re using torches, but it is actually dark! The Adventure books would have given the older children something exciting to delve into, and certainly seem to be a fore-runner of some of the Famous Five's later escapades.

The great thing about her is that, as hot-headed as she is, you don't get any feeling of malice or general nastiness. Summary: Probably quite a good effort to produce them, but just not interested, thank you very much. Blyton seems to use very similar characters in both sets of books and in 'The Adventure' books the children seem more sophisticated but for me not as likeable. It includes wonderful black and white illustrations by Stuart Tresilian which will help bring this lovely story to life.I enjoy many books written with children in mind and because I like 'The famous five' I gave these books a go,they don't lend themselves to adult readers as well as The Five . With their classic mix of adventure, magic and humour (not to mention legendary picnics) her books have been selling in their millions since they were first published in the 1930's. Rather than being a large and rambling house built into the cliffs by the sea its a smallish building built into a rocky mound some way back from the sea. Mostly the children get tangled up in adventures which are connected with Bill's work at the time and end up solving them for him. The four children find themselves caught up in an adventure more thrilling — and dangerous — than they could have imagined. Dustwrapper is worn, edge chipped, slightly grubby with a few foxspots and a little browned to spine.Blyton is, after all, an author about whom the current debate is whether to mock her or despise her.
