In 1914, during the First World War, over 100 R. White employees served in the armed forces and the company supplied the government with over half their horses and vans. In the Second World War, a great part of the vehicle fleet was commandeered by the government and used by the army. During the Blitz three major factories were wiped out in London alone. Artis Capel & Co, soft drinks manufacturers of Neate Street, Camberwell, had been acquired by 1888. Robert White was far from discouraged, however, and employed twelve people by 1871. By this time he had been joined in partnership by his two sons, Robert James White (1849 – 1921) and John George White (1851 – 1942), to form R White & Sons.

R. White's is a British brand of a carbonated lemonade, which is produced and sold in the United Kingdom by Britvic. Robert and Mary White produced the first R. White's lemonade in Camberwell, south London, in 1845. [1] The White Family took over H. D. Rawlings Ltd. in 1891, the year that it was incorporated—a merger which made White's the biggest soft drinks company in London and the south-east—and then R. White & Sons Ltd. was itself incorporated in 1894. [2] [3] The company was taken over by Whitbread in the 1960s, and was later absorbed by Britvic in 1986, when Britvic and Canada Dry Rawlings Ltd. merged. On appeal, the question arose as to whether the defendant could be liable for murder given that his actions had not factually caused the death. A second issue was whether having delivered a single dose was a sufficient ‘attempt’ to ground the conviction in light of the evidence that the defendant had intended the victim to die as a result of later doses which were never administered. Legal Case Summary

It was claimed that R White’s produced half of all lemonade and ginger beer sold in England by 1908. The London factory covered 20 acres, and the company employed 3,000 horses and 1,000 lorries. The court established the ‘but for’ test of causation, according to which the defendant could not be convicted unless it could be shown that ‘but for’ his actions the victim would not have died. On the facts of this case the test was not met, therefore the defendant could not be convicted of murder. R White & Son was the largest soft drinks producer in Britain, and possibly the world. R White’s remains the leading lemonade brand in Britain.* Britvic acquired Canada Dry Rawlings in 1986. The merger brought together Britvic’s strength in fruit juices and cordials, and Canada Dry Rawlings’ strength in carbonated drinks.

R White & Sons had established a factory at Cunard Street in Camberwell by 1881, and employed a workforce of 50. a b c d e f " "Secret lemonade drinker": the story of R White's and successors in Barking and Essex".
