This will revert to the most recent unit tried if there is a significant time gap between the last and most recent times I tried a particular model. Smooth and warm tone. Bass is somewhat loose at times. Treble has sparkles and at the same time sounds smooth. But relative to bass and treble, upper mids and lower treble are somewhat recessed, making the headphones' sound colored. Some people may feel them musical and full, but I prefer the Tascam TH02 at a lower price. The appearance is very good, though, with some feel of high quality. Very comfortable to wear with memory foam pads. The 440s also sound smooth from the mid-bass up to the lower midrange. Bass can sound slightly reticent, but most instruments have their fundamentals present and accounted for. Harman-inspired" tuning works decently well, though a myriad of small quirks ultimately screws its tonal balance.

Very bright in the treble range. Maybe too bright/Sibilant for some. Definitely brighter than a 440. The 440 can be plugged into anything, but if you’re buying these you’ll most likely be using some sort of interface like the Scarlett 2i2 which I highly recommend as a perfect entry-level solution. Who do these headphones benefit? Certainly a "mini-HD800" in terms of tonality only, however still far inferior in technical ability.Suffers from typical estat timbre and bass extension issues, but otherwise a very resolving and well-tuned headphone. It’s not a perfect headphone by any means, but let’s take a look at why it’s still relevant, what its downsides are, and if you should ultimately consider purchasing one for your own projects. Build Surprisingly competent for a decades-old set. Midrange is a little uneven but beats out many other modern TOTLs. The issue, if there is one, is that the range above about 1khz is elevated compared to the bass and lower midrange. This is particularly noticeable on vocals, where singers often sound a bit light or thin. This discontinuity isn’t very big, so the results remain musically involving, but this isn’t the most neutral headphone you can buy. Interestingly, neutral tonal balance is a strength of the SRH840, so give Shure a gold star for market segmentation. A tad too shouty for my tastes, but far less offensive tonal characteristics than the average estat.

The SRH440 headphones are suited for use both at home or in the studio. Impedance, power handling and sensitivity are all calibrated for professional audio devices such as DJ mixers, mixing consoles and headphone amplifiers._ The sound on the SRH-440 is very balanced and neutral if a little boring. It feels almost cold. However one should remember here that the SRH-440 is designed primarily as a monitor headphone and these are traits that are preferred in music production with no one sound spectrum dominating the other.Building on 80 years of pro audio experience, the SRH440 Headphones from Shure provide professional-level sound reproduction and extended comfort. The SRH440 reproduces deep bass with clear mids and highs, with 40mm neodymium dynamic drivers optimized for general listening and monitoring. Impedance, power handling and sensitivity are all calibrated for professional audio devices such as DJ mixers, mixing consoles, and headphone amplifiers. The headband is made of some flexible material covered in a synthetic leatherette, and feels sturdy yet moldable. It sits nicely atop the head. Shure have been leaders in the audio technology industry for over ninety years and they are famous for their commitment to strong, high quality, durable audio equipment and this undoubtedly extends to their SRH440 professional headphones. Featuring the strong, durable build you expect from Shure, the SRH440s also have a detachable cable and replaceable earpads so if you should need to you can easily replace these components without having to replace the entire set of headphones.

Poor sound reproduction with strange peaks and valleys in the signature. More on that in the review. In my very brief experience with the originals they were both surprisingly listenable. They were a slight letdown on build and comfort so alas I never owned either pair myself. I really enjoy the extension these provide, but as metal also said, it’s not quite as clean sounding as something like an HD600’s low-end response around the sub-bass regions.

My DIY speaker system (it measures very flat) served as a reference with respect to tonal balance. I also own some open headphones like Sony MDR-MA900 and Sennheiser PX100, which also provided a baseline when I evaluated tonal balance of the headphones under comparison. I used a desktop headphone amp that has flat FR and reasonably low output impedance.

Again, the fit here is not aggressively awful…but it’s really noticeable on the head and not super ideal for long sessions. If plush comfort is an absolute must, odds are good you won’t love these. Mostly neutral, slight bass lift, highly resolving and natural both in tone and timbre. The world's best headphone.
