He is also the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration and in 1990 was voted 'The Illustrator's Illustrator' by Observer Magazine. Recommended to Quentin Blake fans, and to anyone looking for children's stories about games of make believe and/or intergenerational friendship. I think this would be a good story to use within class to get children using their own imagination and also getting them to discuss the characters. They're trained as the crew of that marvellous ship and spend whole days 'exploring the world' with Mrs Tredegar. As of 2006, he has participated in the writing and/or illustrating of 323 books (of which he wrote 35 himself, and 18 were by Dahl). Rich, sumptuous images fill the pages of this enchanting celebration of the infinite scope of the human imagination. Blake’s use of frame, double-page spread and colour provides an opportunity to discuss the visual literacy involved in reading picture books. I also appreciated the fact that Blake explored an intergenerational friendship between the children and an elderly person in his story.

On either side of these were two tall thin trees, with not many branches that were obviously meant to be the masts. My grandson adores ships and so for him the idea that this could be and the wonderful illustrations kept him enthralled. It might not be entirely feasible to mimic this in your own backyard, but with the inventive spark this book affords, your kids just might be able to come up with an idea for a hide-away fort of their own.I covered up the title page before reading it to them, to see if they could guess what the children might have discovered in the garden/ jungle!

Aging, curiosity, strangers, neighbors, friendship, imagination, creativity, scary storms, supporting others, changes over time. Even children who may not be strong readers can look at the pictures and work out the story that is being told. saw something absolutely astonishing‘ making the reader breathe in with anticipation as to what they will find on the next page. Throughout the summer she, the Bosun and the two children sail the Seven Seas visiting exotic faraway places and having wonderful adventures. It manages to capture all the imagination and wonder of being a child, while still quietly touching on larger themes that will resonate with adults.

With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Is it the bosun and Mrs Tredegar garden, who are they, are they married or just the caretakers of the garden. As would be expected from any book written by Quentin Blake, the illustrations are integral to the narrative and open up discussions around how text and illustrations can combine to tell a story, whilst also posing alternative viewpoints.

When two children climb over the garden wall of a big house, they embark on a very exciting journey. Written and illustrated by Quentin Blake, The Green Ship tells the story of a brother and sister who decide to set off on an adventure whist staying at their aunt's house during the summer. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!He has won many major prizes for illustration, including the Kate Greenaway Medal (1980) and the Red House Children's Book Award (1981) for Mister Magnolia. I've never met a child who doesn't love Quentin Blake" - Daily TelegraphQuentin Blake is one of Britain's best-loved and most successful author-illustrators, and was made the first Children's Laureate in 1999.
